Business Owners - You should hire me!

The applicant pool is filled with a diverse bunch of people, but here are some reasons why mathematicians should stick out when searching for prospective employees.

1. Mathematicians are awesome at multi-tasking
There is never a time where a mathematician is not doing something productive. Most of the time, we are doing multiple productive things at once. For instance, right now I'm writing this blog whilst thinking of a way to solve a proof in one of my classes. Math majors are able to juggle multiple assignments and still be able to produce quality work while meeting the deadline. We work well in fast-paced environments as well as work well under pressure.

2. Mathematicians are natural-born problem solvers
We are constantly thinking about solving something, but can switch to focusing on another problem quickly as well. We are really good at using knowledge from one subject to help in another. We can apply different techniques in order to find the best result.

3. We don't give up.
This goes hand-in-hand with the natural-born problem solvers section. Math isn't always so easy, and sometimes it is very tempting to just give up or try to google the answer. We're the type of people that need to learn the hard way. We need to find out for ourselves even if we struggle in the process. Hints are appreciated and accepted, but we don't want to be given the answer because, well, what's the fun in that? If we don't understand something completely, then we will research it until we do. Math majors are very hard-working individuals that take on any challenges.

4. We enjoy helping others.
From needing advice about how to approach a problem to being by your side to work along you to find the solution, math majors do so with a smile on their face and an eagerness to help. We enjoy explaining our thought processes and elaborating with others. We do well working in groups as well as working independently. We are definitely team players and will strive to help in any way we can.

5. We were able to pass MTH 408 (at Grand Valley) and therefore can handle anything thrown at us.
For those of you that obtained a degree in Mathematics at Grand Valley, you most likely had to endure the hardship that is Math 408 - Advanced Calculus. What does this mean, business owners? Well, it means that this particular student was able to conquer the hardest, most stressful math class any undergraduate could face. Advanced Calculus - the name even sounds stressful. This class has taught us how to prove pretty much any proposition we may have either true or false. This is especially useful in the area of negotiations, as we are able to eloquently prove why our ideas may be better in the long run or why others may fail. This class also taught us how to use other resources (theorems) to aid our work and to be creative when solving problems. By being challenged by such problems, we learn perseverance as well as determination. We are able to solidify our reasoning in our decisions and explain how we got to such conclusions.

Math majors are very well-rounded individuals that have the qualities business owners should be seeking. They are multi-taskers, problem solvers, tenacious, team players and are able to handle stressful situations. Our work is carefully thought out and researched thoroughly, and we are always prepared with proof. Plus, we passed MTH 408. That should count for bonus points.

Thanks for reading!

  1. I like the list you provide for reasons to hire a math major. I feel that some businesses that are hiring may overlook the importance and skills of a math major. With this list, any math major could make a case for themselves when in an interview process. One thing that I would suggest to add to the post is to add to number 2 with saying that mathematics is basically the learning of logic and by accomplishing being a math major, we are some of the most logical thinking individuals.

  2. Great post. Also good prep for interviews. One missing element might be collaboration. They think of math people working solo. In 408 I'm not sure I would emphasize proof as much as problem solving, perseverance and reasoning.

    C's 408
    I mean 5/5
